Asbestos abatement, demolition and backfill of the 20,000 square foot Eremenko Building on Columbia Avenue for the City of Castlegar, taken down over a Kootenay winter.
The job.
The Eremenko Building stood on Columbia Avenue in downtown Castlegar, old, damaged, and full of asbestos in layered applications built up over decades. The City of Castlegar brought us in to abate it, drop it, and backfill the hole, through the winter months.
Abatement was the long half of the job: a large crew working through multilayered asbestos by hand, transferring waste to bins manually where machines could not reach. The demolition itself ran along two busy streets, immediately beside another aging building that could not take a knock.
The structure came down clean, 70 percent of the material was recycled, and the corner was backfilled by February. Downtown Castlegar traded a hazardous eyesore for a clear, safe site.
